Ngorongoro and Crater Highland Treks Note: we can only offer these treks on special request if security conditions allow. We offer several
energetic treks which takes us through some of Africa's most magnificent game
country from the cool and partly forested Ngorongoro
Crater to the dry heat of Lake Natron in the Rift Valley. The treks include a
visit to Lake Manyara Park and/or Tarangire Park and/or Serengeti Park (see individual itineraries). All involve visiting the Ngorongoro Crater where we drive across the Crater, with time for game viewing, to reach
Nainokanoka, a tiny Maasai village lying just below Olmoti Crater in the
heart of the Crater Highlands. From here we walk across the Embulbul depression
to Bulati on the edge of the Empaakai Crater. This is where the main trek to
Lake Natron starts. This takes 2 to 3 days, on the last day we drop down to the
hot Rift Valley floor and drive to the Ngare Sero river where there is a very
pleasant campsite. Several alternatives are then available:- To relax at the shady
Ngare Sero Campsite and visit Lake Natron.
- To ascend Ol Donyo Lengai, 2878m (9650ft) an active volcano. This is quite a demanding but unique and
outstanding trek.
- To walk up the Ngare Sero river gorge where the waterfalls and pools are a complete contrast to the hot
plains by Lake Natron.
On the return journey we drive via Engaruka ruins. There will be some time
available to visit this 15th - 16th century site composed of seven villages
with a complex stone-block irrigation canal and intricate
agricultural system.
Equipment You only need to carry a light day
pack with you. Other than normal safari and camping equipment you should
have a tough pair of walking boots, a sun hat offering neck protection,
sun glasses, sun cream, water bottle, tough trousers or shorts and shirt
made of a light material (if wearing shorts take long socks or light
(preferably) canvas gaiters). A walking pole or two would be useful for
the ascent of Lengai.
